The Baltimore community lost a proud member on Sunday, January 19th with the passing of Mark Monteverde Stokes at the age of 96. Mark was as quick to lend a helping hand as he was to share his broad smile. Born Nov 22, 1928 Mark was raised locally, attending Loyola high school and going on to study engineering at Johns Hopkins, where he played all 4 years on the lacrosse team. Mark is survived by Jackie, his dedicated wife of 67 years. They raised 6 children and have enjoyed seeing the birth of 9 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Mark rooted himself deeply into the north Baltimore area, working as a civil engineer for over 40 years with CJ Langenfelder. Before Mark’s retirement he worked with his church, facilitating food collection for the poor and helping to place refugee families in the area. After his retirement he continued with Genesis Jobs, helping to guide and place ex-offenders with work opportunities locally. He continued in the 2000s with his work at the Assistance Center of Towson Churches, providing food and rent to those in need. The dedication he showed to what was basically his only professional job as an engineer was met, if not eclipsed by a life of joy, support and service.
It wasn’t all work for Mark, as weekends often would find him running his kids to the tennis courts, out on a sailboat, or dragging them up the sledding hill. Along with being a loving father, he wore the hats of a coach, a mentor, and a tireless volunteer equally well. Mark was truly one of a kind, and will be dearly missed. A funeral mass will be held at the Carmelite Monastery on Dulaney Valley Rd. On Thursday Jan 23rd at 11 am., with a visitation preceding at 10. A celebration of life party will be held at Broadmead Retirement Community on York Rd, Saturday, Jan 25 from 11 -1. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Assistance Center of Towson Churches or the Carmelite Monastery.
